Q&A: According to the new Engagement 101 Mag, the ‘fashion forward’ bride is choosing a gemstone engagement ring…?

Question by Marie: According to the new Engagement 101 Mag, the ‘fashion forward’ bride is choosing a gemstone engagement ring…?
Martha Stewart as well as Engagement 101 have been doing articles about the shift in engagement ring choice. It seems the modern bride is not only over the plain white wedding but is also ditching their diamond for a more colorful sparkler. What do you girls feel about gemstone engagement rings?

I have an aquamarine engagement ring so I “feel” that I love gemstone engagement rings.

The bride is choosing the engagement ring?

  • Soon to be Mrs. Moulthrop

It’s not for me. Gemstones seem like a trend. Diamonds are classic and forever. I’m not a gemstone kind of girl. I have a pair of garnet earrings because it’s my birthstone. I also have pearls, but all my rings are diamond and so are my other pieces.

its kind of weird..im getting married soon and my engament ring is a bunch of diamonds.if i saw somebody walking by me with an engament ring on with no dimonands i would think theyre engaged…i would think its just a ring that theyre boyfriend gave to them as a present or they just wore it for theyre outfit to look good…so i dont think its too amazing..but thats just my opnion.

i think you should do whatever you personally like best instead of what a magazine says is fashion forward. i think diamonds are more traditional and also another plus to them is that they go with everything and they are a girls best friend ;)

I think people who put so much value in diamonds are silly and are nothing more than a successful example of a marketing scheme… specifically by DeBeers. Prior to the 1950s, gemstones were commonplace and diamonds–not so much. But because of DeBeer’s slogan “A Diamond is Forever” the demand skyrocketed and they held the monopoly in engagement rings.

I chose my engagement ring (with my soon-to-be husband). I have an aquamarine and I love it. It’s classic, elegant, and fits my style. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I wouldn’t consider myself fashion forward or a “modern” bride. I actually think I’m more vintage–like this era just isn’t right for me.

But I’m not materialistic by any means. I think most diamond demanders are.

It doesn’t say engagement ring to me! I have a gemstone ring on my right hand and I love it. However, it’s just not traditional. I’m a traditional type of girl. Fashion is here today, gone tomorrow. I don’t want to take the chance of reading that “gemstone” engagements rings were sooo 2009 in 15 years.

The diamond engagement rings is never going to die and is never going to be replaced. In 20, 25 or 30 years, our daughters and daugther-in-laws will be sporting diamond engagement rings, the same way our grandmothers and great-grandmother did.

Diamonds are classic. So, while it’s important to be fashionable and keep evolving with the times, I wouldn’t let a fashion or wedding magazine dictate my engagement ring.

Like I said, it’s fashion and it’s here today, gone tomorrow. But, some classic staples (like the white wedding dress and the diamond engagement ring) will always stand the test of time and will always be in style.

My ring has black and white diamonds but originally I was looking at gemstone rings for engagement ring. Mostly because I love my gemstone color and because I felt like the white diamond is plain and boring. My co-workers ring is the eternity band with big white diamonds, I know it cost a lot but it doesn’t seem unique or different. I guess it’s cheaper and now fashion forward.

lol I say GO FOR IT!….

My original engagement ring is a two stone bypass (his birthstone, garnet, and mine, a peridot) accented with a swirl of 7 round diamonds in yellow gold…
..recently, for my birthday he gave me the ring I would have selected if I had picked my own…a 2.6 ct oval ‘brilliant cut’ garnet framed by champagne diamonds & set in yellow gold…the color is like fine merlot wine with an insane amount of flashing red fire within the stone when I move my hand….the diamonds twinkle like gold stars and the entire look of the ring is estate/antique/family heirloom. My original wedding band is a simple classic polished yellow gold band and the two together look wonderful…..
..and it’s HIS birthstone so the sentimentality and meaning behind the stone is there…not like a chunk o’ near colorless, overpriced carbon that just about everyone has.

I like being different. besides, great grandma probably did NOT sport a diamond, since diamonds as an engagement stone did not become popular until AFTER the mid 1930’s……..my grandmother’s ring (she was born 1901 and engaged in 1923) was a pearl ring……before the 1930’s gemstones were commonplace as engagement rings for hundreds of years so THEY are truly the tradition compared to what, how many years of the MODERN diamond?

besides, Princess Di wore a sapphire, and The Duchess of York when she was married to Prince Charles’ bro, wore a ruby as her engagement ring.
